How Coffee Makers Work
Today's modern drip coffeemakers are actually not that complicated as the manufacturers have had many years to perfect their design. The basic drip coffee maker has the water bucket at the top, a basket to put the coffee grounds into, a pot or carafe to catch the coffee, and a warming plate to keep it warm until it is served. Some machines also have advanced features like timers and strength settings but the main function remains the same.
The first thing you will want to do is make sure the machine is clean and ready to brew. For more information on cleaning your coffee maker click here. Now you should remove the basket and install a brand new filter. A filter is important as it allows the water to pass through the coffee grounds but keeps everything else from flowing down. You don't want any crunchy things floating around the pot!
The next step is to add water to the water bucket, filling it up to the correct line. This is a pretty simple step but care should be taken not to spill onto the electric cord.
Now that the coffeemaker is ready to go all you need to do is turn it on and wait for the complete brewing cycle to finish. You will notice the coffee will begin flowing down from the drip area into the pot. It's important at this point to not remove the pot or carafe from the warming plate until the dripping has completely stopped. You don't want coffee falling down onto the warming plate. Also be careful of the plate when you do pour your first cup as it will be quite warm to the touch, and could cause burns.
Pretty much any of the popular electric auto drip coffee makers works in the same fashion, though each one will have its' own quirks for you to get used to. Once you have used the machine for any period of time you will be brewing great coffee every morning. Try to keep it clean when not in use and you will have a much better chance of making a great tasting pot whenever the urge strikes you.
